Traffic Technicians perform daily work in the operation and maintenance of transportation regulatory devices. Work involves a variety of activities including construction and maintenance of traffic signal control and vehicle detection equipment, sign fabrication and installation, as well as street striping and marking. This position also serves on a snow removal crew as part of our Streets Division’s snow removal operations, requiring possession or ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Upcoming projects will be working on the city’s first protected bike lanes and making some of our pilot projects for bicyclists and pedestrians permanent.

Hiring pay ranges:

Traffic Tech I:     $25.25 - $27.91 per hour

Traffic Tech II:    $28.05 - $31.01 per hour

Sr. Traffic Tech: $33.52 - $37.04 per hour

This full-time position is non-exempt per FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.

Work Schedule:  This full-time position will work a "9/80 work week" schedule. For one week, this position works longer workdays with four nine-hour days. Every other Friday or Monday, this position works an eight-hour day with the alternating Friday or Monday being an off day. Must be available to work nights and weekends as needed for snow removal. Overtime opportunities are available throughout the year for special events and projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs skilled work in the construction, installation, and maintenance of traffic signal control equipment. Equipment includes but is not limited to: 

    • A variety of CCTV PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) and detection cameras

    • Traffic cabinets

    • Traffic controllers and MMUs (multifunction monitoring units)

    • Traffic signal heads, pedestrian heads, and pedestrian buttons

    • Traffic network switches and devices 

    • Wireless spread spectrum network radios 

    • Lighting equipment including luminaire street/overhead lighting, school flasher beacons, school zone safety flashers, and pedestrian push button activated systems 

  • Performs technical underground locating of traffic, electric, and fiber facilities as aTier 1 member of the Utility Notification Center of Colorado (UNCC). 

  • Monitors performance of traffic devices utilizing features of computerized master control software (Econolite Centracs). 

  • Installs and maintains fiber optic communications cables and wireless communications equipment. 

  • Designs, fabricates, installs, and maintains signs including traffic signs, electronic speed limit signs, signposts, temporary special event signage, and other city signs using computer-aided design software, plotter, and pressure sensitive sheeting according to regulations and specifications contained in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). 

  • Responsible for layout and installation of crosswalk markings, lane markings, and symbols using thermoplastic, paint, and tape. 

  • Ability to construct and maintain solar and hard-wired signals, including diagnosing traffic signal malfunctions, NEMA cabinet issues, and completing minor wiring changes, as necessary, inside the traffic signal cabinet, and the UPS battery backup system. Ability to diagnose and repair multiple vehicle detection types including loops, cameras, and radar. 

  • Ability to layout road markings and operate street striping equipment to apply paint that serves as markings for traffic lane separation, turn lane pockets and bicycle lanes, and operates and performs regular maintenance on paint truck.

  • Willingness to learn and apply MUTCD standards for signing, signals, and all traffic control. 

  • Assists with special projects including quarterly traffic signal surveys, vehicle counts using a variety of counters, and other traffic duties as required, such as: clearing visual obstructions surrounding traffic signs; tree trimming; pilot project and quick build installations of safety equipment, installation and setup of variable message boards, and traffic control assistance on city projects. 

  • Street maintenance and snow removal activities include, but are not limited to, operating a utility or single or tandem axle dump truck to plow snow, applying sand and salt to roadways, and hauling materials and supplies. 

  • Responsible for entering work and updating assets in city’s asset management system (Cartegraph).

  • Performs operator's maintenance daily, or as otherwise required, for all assigned vehicles and equipment. 

  • Performs other similar assignments and projects, as required. 

  • May serve as an Emergency Worker. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications for Traffic Technician I: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent; and 

  • Six (6) months of experience with installing and maintaining traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings or working in roadways/traffic control; or 

  • An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.

  • IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician Certification required within 6 months of employment. 

  • IMSA Traffic Signal Technician I or Signs & Pavement Markings Technician I Certification required within 18 months of employment.

  • Flagger Certification required within 6 months of employment. 

  • Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment (paid for by city). 

  • Any IMSA classes or other classes related to the job requirements are paid for by the city.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check, motor vehicle records check, Department of Transportation drug screen, and DOT physical.

  • Must learn and follow all city safety procedures.

Minimum Qualifications for Traffic Technician II: 

  • Same as Transportation Technician I; and 

  • Three (3) years of experience with installing and maintaining traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings, or working in roadways/traffic control; or 

  • An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.

  • IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician II Certification. 

  • IMSA Signs & Pavement Marking Technician II Certification.

  • Proficient knowledge of and ability to apply MUTCD standards.

  • Proficient ability to diagnose and preform signal maintenance.

  • Proficiency in the layout and appropriate use of signage and road markings.

Minimum Qualifications for Senior Traffic Technician:

  • Same as Transportation Technician II; and 

  • Five (5) years of experience with installing and maintaining traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings, or working in roadways/traffic control; or 

  • An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.

  • Expert in signal repair, trouble shooting, and maintenance.

  • IMSA Traffic Signal Senior Field Technician III Certification. 

  • Additional IMSA or equivalent certifications in a related field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Strong analytical and technical skills with ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair equipment. 

  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills including standard Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn and utilize asset management and other job specific applications. 

  • Ability to effectively operate assigned vehicles and equipment. 

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers at all levels. 

  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service for both internal and external customers. 

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, providing assistance, expertise, and sharing information with others, working toward solutions. 

  • Flexibility and adaptability to quickly changing priorities; ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a calm, organized manner. 

  • Attention to detail and accuracy with the ability to create and maintain traffic signal operation and maintenance records, and related documents to perform the essential functions of the position. 

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of traffic signal, traffic sign, and traffic striping and marking installation, operation, maintenance, and repair.   

  • Knowledge of traffic control devices as regulated and specified in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) published by the United States Department of Transportation-Federal Highway Administration.  

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of hand and power tool operation and the skill and ability to apply that knowledge to perform the essential functions of the position. 

  • Sign manufacturing experience.

  • Electrical experience not required but a positive skill to possess. 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Requires the ability to work in adverse weather conditions. 

  • Outdoor work activities include exposure to dusts, vehicle fumes, and exhausts; occasional exposure to mists, gases, poor ventilation; equipment vibration; vehicle and equipment noise occasionally reaching 125 decibels of unprotected noise exposure (the use of hearing protection devices to reduce noise exposure to permissible OSHA levels is mandatory); exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards; working on high, exposed worksites; exposure to radiant energy and burn hazards; exposure to toxic and caustic chemicals; exposure to paints, thinners, epoxy compounds, and glues. The wearing of protective gloves and eye safety goggles is mandatory while operating equipment or performing job duties that present eye and hand injury hazards. 

  • Other physical activities include lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to 75 pounds with or without assistance.
