Job Description

The Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring sustainability initiatives as set forth by city council. This includes developing and implementing sustainability policies, programs, and strategies, as well as collaborating with other departments, agencies, and partners to ensure that sustainability is integrated into all aspects of the organization. This position champions efforts outlined in the Environmental Stewardship Boards’ action plan.

Starting pay range $60,350 - $66,700 per year

This full-time position is exempt per FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Work Schedule: This is a full-time position and has the option to work a hybrid schedule with some days teleworking and some days working in person at the office.

  • Identify and purse opportunities to reduce the City of Littleton’s environmental footprint and enhance social and economic sustainability.

  • Develop and implement sustainability policies, programs, and strategies that align with the Environmental Stewardship Boards’ (ESB) action plan.

  • Monitor and report on sustainability performance metrics and conduct assessments to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency, water usage, waste generation, and greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Develop and deliver sustainability training and education programs to city staff and community members.

  • Collaborate with other departments to integrate sustainability into their operations and decision-making processes.

  • Stay up to date on the latest sustainability trends, regulations, and best practices.

  • Build relationships with external partners to advance the city’s sustainability goals. In particular keep up to date on DRCOG Climate Action Plan.

  • Communicate the city’s sustainability performance and progress to ESB, city council, internal stakeholders, and external audiences. This can be done through reports, presentations, and other communications, represent the city at conferences and with local media.

  • Coordinate and implement community-wide sustainability programs and projects, rallying and engaging community and staff support for behavior changes that lead to a more sustainable future for the city.

  • Develop grants for submission to grantors including narrative, reimbursement requests, and completion tracking.

  • Be a liaison for the ESB. Attend evening and weekend meetings, as needed.


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college with coursework in environmental science, sustainability, or closely related field; and

  • Three (3) years of work experience developing and implementing sustainability policies, programs, and strategies, or a similar experience; or

  • An equivalent combination of formal education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.


  • Understanding of sustainability and climate issues, including greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, renewable energy, waste reduction, natural resource conservation and climate change impacts.

  • Basic knowledge of the principles and practices associated with planning and budgeting.

  • Data analysis and management: able to collect and analyze data related to sustainability and climate issues and use this information to develop strategies and policies.

  • Policy development and implementation: able to develop policies and initiatives that promote sustainability and climate resilience, and work with local officials to implement these policies.

  • Communication and collaboration: able to communicate effectively with local officials, community members, businesses, and other stakeholders about sustainability and climate issues, and work collaboratively to develop and implement solutions.

  • Project management: able to manage sustainability and climate projects from start to finish, including planning, budgeting, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations: have a good understanding of the relevant laws, regulations, and policies related to sustainability and climate issues, and ensure that the local government's sustainability initiatives comply with these requirements.

  • Leadership and advocacy: able to lead and inspire others to act on sustainability and climate issues, and advocate for policies and initiatives that promote sustainability and climate resilience.

  • Ability to work with limited supervision on complex, self-directed projects, and work as part of a team.

  • Supports and manages initiatives from city council and the ESB.

  • Fosters innovative ideas and streamlines operations to provide meaningful value for customers and the community.


  • Work is performed both indoors in a public building environment and outdoors on public infrastructure. Long periods of sitting, standing, or walking may be required.

  • Physical activities include occasions lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.

  • Requires ability to sit, stand, operate a vehicle, walk and tolerate extreme weather conditions and temperatures.
