Overall Job Objective


Considering a career in historic preservation? The City of Littleton is offering a paid internship for an individual interested in learning more about historic preservation while assisting the City of Littleton Planning team with a variety of historic preservation projects. This internship provides a great way to get to know our Littleton team and make connections for future opportunities.


The Historic Preservation program works to protect and enhance historic buildings, sites and neighborhoods in Littleton. The Historic Preservation Intern will have the opportunity to help with projects such as developing the Legacy List as set forth in Section 10-8-2 of the city code, assisting with the Downtown Historic District Fund program, and updating historic building surveys from 2001 in the Louthan Heights Historic District.


The ideal candidate is curious, self-motivated, and has an interest in local history and historic preservation of municipal landmarks. The ideal candidate is adept with technology and has strong computer and photography skills. The ability to conduct detailed research and catalogue information is a must.

Starting pay at or near $20.00 per hour


This internship is non-exempt per FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.


Work Schedule: This part-time internship will work 20-25 hours per week and is expected to last through the summer and preferably beyond. Schedule is flexible with the ability to sometimes work remotely.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop the Legacy List as set forth in Section 10-8-2:
    1. Review properties identified in surveys as historically significant for inclusion on the List.
    2. Review historic districts identified in surveys and assess for inclusion on the List.
    3. Provide combined info to IT Department to create a Legacy List layer in GIS.
    4. Prepare materials to create webpages on the city website on the Legacy List, including maps, matrix, photographs.


    • Assist with the Downtown Historic District Fund program for 2022:
      1. Take photos for use in the brochure and webpage.
      2. Work with property owner and tenants to encourage applications and explain the program details, as needed.
      3. Complete the first review of any applications that may be submitted.


      • Update historic building surveys from 2001 in the Louthan Heights Historic District:
        1. Use city’s software program to update all 16 properties in the district.
        2. Download surveys onto state survey forms and submit for inclusion in state database.
        3. Format updated surveys for inclusion on the city website.


        • Take photos of designation historic landmarks to update the city website historic preservation pages.

        • Other tasks and projects, as assigned by Historic Preservation Planner.



        Minimum Qualifications

        • College course work in Historic Preservation, History, Architecture, or a related field; or 
        • An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position may be considered.
        • Must have a valid driver’s license.
        • Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check and motor vehicle records check.




        • College course work related to historic preservation, historical research or architecture
        • Strong photography skills and/or experience with architectural photography
        • Knowledge of architectural terminology


        Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

        • Knowledge of local history, historic preservation, and historical research best practices.
        • Strong technology skills, including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Outlook; photo editing software and knowledge a plus.
        • Photography skills and ability to edit and upload photos to various platforms.
        • Ability to conduct detailed research and catalogue information.
        • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
        • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate findings and information in an organized manner.
