Description

The City of Littleton has an opening for an Emergency Services Dispatcher - Police. The Police Dispatcher receives emergency law enforcement, fire and medical calls for the public.  Ascertains the severity of the emergency and dispatches the appropriate emergency units necessary to respond.  Maintains and verbally communicates resource information to police officers, firefighters, and citizens. Determines and dispatches appropriate police or fire units to respond to both emergency and routine situations.  Contacts and coordinates support agency response to calls including, but not limited to, other law enforcement agencies, fire agencies, ambulance companies, building inspection departments, health department, and Red Cross.  Others include FAA, air traffic controllers, the County coroner, and water/sanitation districts.  Maintains continuous communication with emergency units through radio, pager, cell phone, CAD and other specialized equipment for proper resource allocation in varying emergency situations including hazardous materials and disaster response.

Delivers work products and services to customers within assigned full-time, non-traditional work schedule that may include work on day, swing, overlap, or graveyard shifts.  Work schedule may also include additional work shifts as a substitute for absent dispatchers or as emergency operations require.

HIRING RANGE SALARY:
Emergency Services Dispatcher: $19.42 per hour - $24.28 per hour
Lateral Emergency Services Dispatcher: $24.28 per hour - $26.71 per hour
 

Essential Duties & Reponsibilities

  • Receives calls daily (emergency 9-1-1 calls) by radio and telephone reporting or requesting emergency law enforcement, fire or hazardous material services or medical assistance.  Through questioning, determines jurisdiction and customer needs.  Records information received, elevates emergency response, prioritizes simultaneous multiple calls, and dispatches or coordinates with law enforcement or fire personnel for appropriate response personnel and equipment.
  • Provides the information or service to satisfy the customer need(s). Visitors/customers include general public, law enforcement officials, fire department officials, the department's public information officer, employees of other agencies, and City staff members.
  • Responds to routine radio and telephone calls daily requesting information or assistance; provides requested information or assistance, takes and routes messages, or transfers callers to the appropriate individual or agency.
  • Maintains and updates current information of personnel assignments, police officers, emergency fire and medic vehicles and equipment, including location and status of service.
  • Enters data into computer terminals; composes and types messages; records reports, forms, correspondence, written materials from telephone and radio voice communications, handwritten copy, typed copy, taped voice communications, and in-person communication; checks for accuracy, completeness, correct spelling, and grammar; obtains approvals and signatures as required; and makes and distributes copies as required.
  • Researches, locates, and retrieves information /documents from electronic and other information sources.
  • Observes and follows established City and department policies and procedures daily.
  • Plans and arranges work schedule and establishes priorities to complete scheduled, assigned work within parameters assigned by the supervisor.
  • Must be able to provide credible testimony.
  • Maintains and retrieves computer data files on stolen property and missing and wanted persons.
  • Sends teletype information to other law enforcement agencies via CCIC/NCIC computer systems.
  • Responds to media calls after major incidents occur and the Public Information Officer has issued a statement that can be released.  
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker.
  • Other Duties as assigned

SECONDARY DUTIES  & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Attends communications training and staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Teaches 9-1-1 educational workshops/training to schools, at open houses, and at City functions.
  • Performs other assignments and projects as required.
 
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS & SUPERVISORY DUTIES:
This Position Reports To:  Deputy Communications Supervisor Police (DCSP)
This Position Has Supervisory Responsibility For:  None.
 

Education, Formal Training & Experience

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of customer service experience; and
  • Requires certification of CCIC/NCIC operations within six months of issuance of operator security/member, or its equivalent for out of state applicants; and, renewal of certification every two years; and,
  • Requires ability to type at a speed of at least 35 wpm with no more than seven (7) errors as demonstrated in pre-employment testing and ability to type at least 35 wpm on the job with ability to correct errors prior to preparation of final draft work products; or
  • Requires an equivalent combination of education, formal training, or work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Prefer a valid driver's license, and a qualifying driver's record as required by the City's personnel policies and procedures and the skill and ability to safely and effectively operate assigned City vehicles.

POLICE DISPATCH CANDIDATES - LATERAL HIRES:
Hiring Range: $24.28 per hour - $26.71 per hour
  • Has at least 5 years+ years of experience at a primary PSAP; and,
  • Holds a current CCIC/NCIC certification or its equivalent for out of state applicants; and,
  • Holds a current Incident Command System (ICS) certificate.
  •  As a lateral hire meeting all the above criteria, candidates are eligible for the equivalency of up to two additional years advancement through the pay grade for this position. 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:

  • Personal computer, communications console, and related software; radio; photocopier, fax; street maps; emergency response maps; and computerized run cards. 
 
WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
  • Physical activities include frequently lifting (from a sitting or bending position) objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
  • Frequent stooping, occasional kneeling and crouching; frequent reaching, constant handling and fingering, constant talking, hearing, and seeing with near and far acuity and in low and bright light conditions.
  • Long periods of sitting, standing or walking may be required.  Assigned work is performed indoors in an emergency communications center environment with occasional work outside; that includes exposure to multiple telephone and radio signals; tone alarms; and in-person, radio, and telephone voice communications, loud noises, and vibrations.
