Overall Job Objective


The Littleton Museum has on opening for a part time Custodian. 

The Museum Custodian maintain the cleanliness and physical appearances of the city's buildings. May include, but not limited to, museum buildings, collections building, two historic farm sites building, and/or Bemis Library.

The position is for 24 hours per week. This position qualifies for part time benefits.

The schedule is as follows: Saturday & Sunday 8am - 5pm and Wednesday 9am - 6pm. This position will split their day between the Littleton Museum and Bemis Library 

Essential Duties & Reponsibilities

  • Sweeps and mops floors and/or vacuums carpet.
  • Dusts and washes surfaces. Surfaces include desks, counter tops, fixtures, historic furniture, historic buildings, antiques, appliances, and other cleanable objects in assigned buildings.
  • Cleans and disinfects restroom floors, sinks, toilets, counters, waste bins, and mirrors.
  • Disposes of trash and recyclables in appropriate receptacles.
  • Cleans windows, glass, and mirror surfaces to remove dirt, grease, or fingerprints, etc.
  • Works with supervisor to order cleaning supplies.
  • Observes and follows established City and department policies and procedures in the daily conduct of the job.
  • Plans and arranges work schedule and establishes priorities to complete scheduled assigned work within parameters assigned by the supervisor.
  • Moves cabinets, boxes, furniture, crates and equipment to clean areas.
  • May remove stains from surfaces such as rugs, drapes, walls, and floors using chemicals and cleaning solutions.
  • Addresses custodial concerns identified by customers.
  • Delivers services to customers and staff.
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Office Manager.
  • Performs other assignments and projects as required.

  • Work during special events such as crafts fair, harvest festival, and all other museum events as assigned.
  • Schedules workloads of community service workers to assist in cleaning museum buildings, farm sites, grounds, and surrounding areas.
  • Performs other assignments and projects as required.

Education, Formal Training & Experience


  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Requires a minimum of six months experience as a building custodian

  • Requires knowledge of the principles and techniques of cleaning floors, restrooms, glass, mirrors, objects, and surfaces within assigned areas.
  • Requires sufficient skill and the ability to: operate push and hand brooms, electric vacuums and buffers; prepare and apply cleaning solutions and waxes; remove dirt, grease, dust, and fingerprints from surfaces.
  • Ability to operate hand and power cleaning equipment; skill, and ability to properly mix cleaning solutions according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • Mental duties needed to perform the essential functions of this position include Initiative, patience, visual discrimination, aesthetic sense, memory, and judgement.
  • Ability to understand verbal information and instruction. Ability to exchange information with others and to develop and present recommendations.
  • Reads and understands written information.

  •  Vacuum cleaner, buffing machine, other equipment of a housekeeping nature as needed.

  • Long periods of sitting, standing or walking may be required.
  • The work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment with exposure to extreme cold, heat, wet, and/or humid conditions in the following buildings:  museum buildings, collections building, farms sites, and museum grounds.
  • Requires frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to 70 pounds; climbing stools and ladders to clean windows, or walls; kneeling, bending, stooping, reaching, crouching, and handling to perform essential duties.
  • Work environment includes exposure to noise from vacuums and buffers; odors from cleaning solutions; dust, dirt, grease, water, and chemical compounds.
