The City of Littleton has a job opening for an experienced city planner, able to help us with current and long-range planning projects in a multi-modal community of approximately 50,000 residents with a charming and historic downtown area.

Planners are responsible for coordinating and managing a wide variety of projects for the City of Littleton. Planners are expected to be part of a dynamic team including engineers, utility providers, economic development specialists, building officials, emergency service providers, historic preservationists, neighborhood groups, and many others working to assure the best development within the City of Littleton.

We are a small planning team but work together to allow a hybrid work schedule.  This position would be eligible for a hybrid schedule but would be expected to be in the office at least three days each week.  This position may also be eligible for flex-work schedule.  City planners are expected to work evenings on occasion to support the Littleton City Council and its boards and commissions.
 
This full-time position is exempt per FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.  Depending on the candidate’s qualifications, the city will hire either a Planner II or Senior Planner.  

The city will start interviewing candidates as soon as it has established a qualified pool. It is essential that you apply as early as possible to be considered. 

 
Starting salary for Senior Planner $86,756
Range: $65,067-$108,445
Starting salary for Planner II $71,652
Range: $53,739-$89,565

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responds to inquiries by the public regarding zoning and subdivision requirements, potential uses of buildings and land, addressing, and signage;
  • Provides support, prepares staff reports, and makes clear and organized presentations before city council, planning commission, historical preservation board, and the board of adjustment in a complete and timely manner;  
  • Drafts zoning ordinances and/or amendments to existing ordinances;
  • Drafts policy for inclusion in long range plans;
  • May lead consultant teams;
  • May assist the GIS division with the creation or update of city maps;
  • May develop, lead, and participate in public engagement efforts;
  • May participate in grant application efforts on behalf of the city;
  • Analyzes land use applications for compliance with adopted policy and the city code;
  • Researches planning topics and writes technical reports as assigned;
  • Leads pre-application meetings; reviews and makes final decisions on applications for sign permits, and other administratively reviewed development applications;  
  • Conducts field inspections for compliance with approved plans and coordinates with the building and code enforcement division on the enforcement of the sign code and fence permits; 
  • Participates in development review team meetings;
  • May manage city interns as needed;
  • May collaborate with educators of primary or secondary school urban planning projects and studios;
  • Uses a city issued computer and various software programs to produce written communications and accomplish other work products;
  • Delivers work products and services to customers within assigned full-time work schedule;
  • Observes and follows established City and departmental policies and procedures;
  • May appear as a witness for the City in municipal or district court regarding zoning matters;
  • Performs other similar assignments and projects as required and
  • May act as emergency worker.
 
 

Minimum Qualifications

Senior Planner
 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning or closely related field, and
  • A minimum five (5) years of professional working experience in municipal current or long-range planning for the Senior Planner position or,  
  • An equivalent combination of education, training or work experience, which produces the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position
 
Planner II

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning or closely related field, and
  • A minimum two (2) years of professional working experience in municipal current or long-range planning for the Planner II position or,
  • An equivalent combination of education, training or work experience, which produces the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
 
Preferred Qualifications 
  • A Master’s Degree in Urban Planning or a closely related field
  • AICP certification through the American Planning Association
  • Database management experience
  • GIS experience
  • Experience working in historic communities
  • Working knowledge of eTRAKiT permitting and case tracking software
  • Experience managing multiple planning cases

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

 

  • Requires advanced knowledge of City codes and ordinances; Colorado Revised Statues as they relate to planning; and locations of City neighborhoods and the general layout of the City;
  • Advanced level understanding of current events in the City, including proposed private developments, neighborhood issues and concerns, and ongoing and proposed public projects in the city;
  • Specific knowledge of City zoning and subdivision regulations;
  • Specific knowledge of various neighborhood plans, corridor plans, and the city comprehensive plan;
  • Detailed knowledge of urban planning principles;
  • Advanced level ability to read and interpret codes, regulations, meeting minutes, technical manuals, and statutes, and
