Overall Job Objective


The Littleton Museum seeks an individual to support the exhibits department while learning valuable skills to help he or she succeed in the museum industry. Ideal candidates should currently be enrolled in a degree program (undergraduate or masters) for the study of art history, anthropology, cultural or museum studies, or a similarly related field.

Individuals who apply should be organized and detail-oriented, able to work diligently with minimal supervision, passionate about the industry, and energetic and creative. This is a for-credit, unpaid internship.

Proposed schedule 

This is an internship that would be best performed onsite although some tasks might be performed remotely. The ideal candidate would be available to work primarily onsite at the museum during regular museum office hours (Monday-Friday, 9 am to 5 pm) in a combination of days and times that works best for them. Total hours should not exceed 10 hours per week over the course of the 8-week internship.

The City of Littleton Fine Arts Board is pleased to announce an upcoming exhibition of fine art, Best of Show, featuring the artwork of Ashley Allen and Olga and Aleksey Ivanov. The artists won the award "Best of Show" for competitive exhibitions in 2020; Allen for the 2020 Eye of the Camera exhibit, and the Ivanovs, for the 2020 Own an Original exhibit.  


Through a curated selection of these artists’ recent works, I and We, explores the concept of the individual versus the duo when considering artistic inspirations and processes. Allen, whose work explores the role of the individual within familial groups, as well as one’s relationship with nature, focuses on using photography to explore one’s identity in the larger world. In contrast to the unique and dynamic role of the individual, is the delicate and harmonious balance of a partnership. The Ivanovs are spouses who have worked together on paintings for over twenty-five years. They collaborate symbiotically on each egg tempera painting they create, reflecting the strong bond they share as life partners.  


Print Renaissance: Mid-century Masters of American Printmaking

September 24 - October 16, 2021

The founding of new print studios in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s led to a resurgence of printmaking. As artists began working alongside skilled printmakers, lithographs and silkscreens grew increasingly popular as more affordable options for collecting original works. Artists, including Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Frank Stella and Robert Rauschenberg, integrated printmaking into their artistic practices. This exhibition features these artists and more in a celebration of 20th-century masters of American printmaking. Visitors will learn about printmaking techniques and this important chapter in American art history.

The Secret Life of Clothes

November 4, 2021 - November 27, 2022

With over 8 billion people on Earth, one of the common threads that humans share is wearing clothes as a basic necessity for protection and also a means of self-expression. But when we think about clothing, it’s usually in connection to fashion and how and where the person is wearing their clothing, more often than not, outside of the home and irrespective of the origins of the very fabric the item is made of. While clothing began as a basic necessity to individuals who had a very intimate connection to the laborious process of its creation, care and storage, in more modern days, it has evolved into a highly accessible, but easily detached from and disposed of, means of societal expression.

The Secret Life of Clothes tells the everyday story of the "lifecycle" of clothes - the overlooked journey of clothing as a progression from fiber to finished garment, sale to storage, and finally to mending, disposal or reuse. This exhibit examines the purpose and need for different clothes, as well as the lifecycle processes over two distinct time periods as set in Colorado: 1880-1910, and modern day. Visitors will experience a variety of fashions, as well as the tools, materials, and context of how those clothes were made, worn, cared for, mended, and stored.

The exhibit also explores the future of clothing, considering the economic, cultural, and environmental impacts of the massive growth of the fast-fashion clothing industry and how, in response, new innovations are leading the way towards a more sustainable clothing lifecycle for future generations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Exhibit Design and Programming Tasks

Assist the Curator of Exhibits with the preparation of exhibition-related materials such as exhibit labels, vinyl graphics, educational/activity cards, exhibit and display furniture, etc.

Help with installation of exhibits (including hanging artwork and preparing, setting in-place exhibit-related items)

Explore ideas and opportunities for new exhibit-related programming and assist with the development and planning of virtual and on-site events and programming

Inventory and label exhibits’ department supplies, including pedestals, vitrines, acrylic display surfaces, risers, mounts, mannequins, etc.

Perform research for exhibit design and development and compile information/create idea boards for further consideration

Complete design image research utilizing iStock and create lightboxes for design review

Aid in the printing and trimming of graphics and other exhibits/programming materials 

Marketing and Communications Tasks

Contribute to creating targeted marketing plans for exhibits and assist with research for content, design and implementation, including potential advertising and media outlets

Create an organized photo library with corresponding metadata. Select samples of quality images from specific exhibits and events and upload them to the city’s shared photo database.

Compile artist and exhibit information for use in various communication outlets including website, e-newsletter, social, printed materials, etc.

Identify potential for community partnerships (when applicable) for specific exhibits or programs

Assist with content creation and organization of social media posts as well as monthly schedule

Curatorial and Marketing Goals

Increase the length of stay and level of engagement of visitors when viewing interior exhibitions at the museum

Support the image of the Littleton Museum as a community resource for general fine art and history knowledge and understanding, and as a creative respite and cultural sanctuary where community members can relax, learn and grow individually or in groups

Interface with other local community art organizations and museums to share industry knowledge and experience and to grow partnerships in the Denver-metro area

Have a more targeted yearly marketing plan that factors in the particular subjects/interests of the upcoming exhibition schedule and that aims to fill in gaps in current visitorship

Increase reach of social media posts and develop a more regular schedule

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and currently a BA, BS or MA candidate.  Students will be required to submit an application, including appropriate documentation that outlines the for-credit requirements.
