Our seasonal needs include:
  • 2 utilities positions - needed May through August
  • 2-3 summer clean up positions- needed June and July
  • 5-8 grounds positions- needed between March through November (24 week maximum)

 Essential
Duties & Responsibilities:

GROUNDS MAINTENANCE SEASONAL:
  • Maintains planted and landscaped outdoor areas of City-owned properties in a healthy and attractive condition      
  • Usually work from March through November for some positions and summer only for others.
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker.

SUMMER CLEAN UP SEASONAL:
  • Office staff position assists in the annual community summer clean-up program by receiving, recording and scheduling requests for pick-up of unwanted household items. 
  • Pick-up crew position, loads and transports items from residential properties to the transfer station or city shops.
  • These two positions may alternate or substitute with each other when necessary.
  • Usually works from mid-May through mid-August.
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker.

UTILITIES SEASONAL:
  • Assists regular full-time utility workers by performing skilled work in the operation of vehicles and equipment and unskilled laboring work to maintain and repair sanitary sewer collection and storm drainage utility systems.
  • The work involves the performance of duties related to all aspects of the repair and maintenance of sanitary sewer collection and storm drainage utility systems.
  • This is a temporary or seasonal full-time position. Usually works from May through August.
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker.

Performs other assignments and projects as required.

 Education, Formal Training & Experience:
  • Minimum age of 18
  • High school graduate, or equivalent.
  • Requires an equivalent combination of education, formal training and work experience which produces the knowledge, skill and ability to perform the essential duties/responsibilities of the position.
  • Requires possession of a valid Colorado driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated and a qualifying driver's record as prescribed by the City of Littleton Personnel Policies and Procedures.

 Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITY: 
GROUNDS MAINTENANCE SEASONALS: 
  • Cuts grass using gasoline-fueled riding lawn mowers, push (walk behind) power lawn mowers; edges, and fertilizes.
  • Removes ground litter from landscaped area prior to cutting grass or weeds. Cuts weeds using gasoline-fueled power weed whips.
  • Transports lawn mowers, weed whips, lawn waste, litter, fuel from and to assigned area by operating a utility pickup truck with attached trailer.
  • Maintains assigned lawn mowers daily by fueling, maintaining proper oil levels, sharpening and replacing worn or damaged cutting blades, and clearing obstructions from lawn mower blades.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles by performing operator maintenance checks of windshield wipers, fuel and oil level, tire pressure, brake fluid levels, and other assigned operator maintenance checks.
  • Prepares soil, and plants bedding plants in designated flowerbeds and pots.
  • Removes weeds from flower and shrub beds by hand pulling and the use of hand tools.
  • Aerates lawns by operating a riding gasoline-powered, or walk behind lawn aerators.
  • Applies lawn fertilizer to lawn areas using hand-operated, or push-type fertilizer spreaders.
  • Waters trees and flowers using hand held hoses from a truck mounted water tank.
  • Plants and maintains trees and shrubs using hand tools.
  • Applies mulch to planted tree and shrub areas.
  • Hangs strings of Christmas lights on trees in designated areas of downtown Littleton in the fall.
  • Assists with snow removal (as necessary) by clearing snow from walkways, driveways, and parking lots using hand and powered snow removal equipment.
  • Observes and follows established City and department policies and procedures in the daily conduct of the job.
  • Plans and arranges work schedule and establishes work priorities to accomplish schedules, assigned work within the parameters assigned by the supervisor.
  • Full-time work products and services are delivered Monday-Friday.
  • In addition, work services or overtime work may be required after 4:00 p.m. or on Saturdays to complete assigned tasks
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker.

SUMMER CLEAN UP SEASONALS:
  • Courteously and promptly answers telephone calls daily providing information on clean-up program for customers. 
  • Through thorough and knowledgeable questioning, determines caller's needs for requested pick-up of unwanted household items; verifies customer's eligibility for pick-up of unwanted items using program eligibility criteria; fills out the appropriate item pick-up form in writing and schedules the unwanted items for removal by pickup crew.
  • Courteously greets visitors/customers at the building counter; through thoughtful and knowledgeable questioning, determines customer needs and provides the information or service to satisfy the customer need(s). Visitors/customers include general public and city staff members.
  • Pick-up crew loads and unloads miscellaneous items, sorts and recycles branches and metal.
  • Observes and follows established city and department policies and procedure in the daily conduct of the job.
  • Plans and arranges work schedule and establishes priorities to complete scheduled, assigned work within parameters assigned by the supervisor.
  • Delivers work product and services with responsiveness, courtesy and tact in personal interactions with customers and staff.
  • Delivers work products and services to customers within assigned work schedule which averages 40 hours per week and is usually performed between 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.  
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker.

UTILITIES SEASONAL WORKER:
  • Assists in performing preventive maintenance on sanitary sewer and storm drainage collection systems by operating or assisting with the operation of a high velocity sewer cleaner truck, a combination vacuum/high velocity sewer jet truck, and related tools and equipment including a sewer cleaning easement machine.
  • Operates or assists in the operation of a closed circuit television inspection device to televise sanitary and storm drainage sewer systems. Assists in the inspection and evaluation of the condition of these systems. Assists in the maintenance and repair of the systems, as needed.
  • Assists in the inspection and cleaning of storm drainage inlet grates and trash racks to remove trash and debris, as required.
  • Helps to perform operator's maintenance and repair on assigned vehicles and equipment as scheduled, required, or assigned.
  • May be assigned to drive a pick-up truck, utility van, or medium duty single axle truck. Not assigned and not permitted to drive vehicles that require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including: high velocity sewer cleaner, combination vacuum sewer cleaner, sewer cleaning easement machine, heavy duty single axle truck, and heavy duty tandem axle truck.
  • Updates and maintains vehicle and equipment maintenance logs and reports, as required or assigned.
  • Observes and follows established City and department policies and procedures, vehicle and equipment operator's instructions and manuals in the daily conduct of the job.
  • Plans and arranges work schedule and establishes priorities to complete scheduled and assigned work within the parameters assigned by the supervisor. Records and reports daily work activities and projects using a log sheet. 
  • Delivers work products and services to customers within the assigned temporary/seasonal full-time work schedule. The work schedule includes a requirement to perform overtime work as required.
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:
GROUNDS MAINTENANCE SEASONALS: 
  • Mowers, weed whips, utility pickup trucks with trailers; two way radios. Rototillers, backpack and truck-mounted weed sprayers; utility pickup truck with water tank; hand tools to plant and care for flowers; two-way radios; and utility truck with hydraulic bucket. 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: 
  • Basic knowledge of the operation and maintenance of and the skill and ability to safely operate the following power equipment and vehicles: riding lawn mowers, walk behind mowers, pickup truck with utility trailers and string trimmers.
  • Skill and ability to perform strenuous physical work which involves lifting and handling objects frequently which weigh up to 80 pounds from ground to waist height; ability to walk for 3-8 hours per day; ability to frequently handle miscellaneous maintenance equipment and grass clippings weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally pushing riding mowers.
  • Requires ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, feel, talk, hear voices, equipment engines, approaching traffic, near and/far visual acuity, depth perception, and color vision to perform essential functions of the position.
  • Basic knowledge of traffic safety precautions.
  • Basic knowledge of the operation of and the skill and ability to safely operate the following equipment and vehicles: pickup truck with mounted water tank, dump truck with hydraulic bed; hand shovels, backpack weed sprayer, rototiller, rakes, pick axes. Ability to operate tree chipper and gasoline engine-powered chain saw following instruction and on-the-job training.
  • Basic knowledge of or the ability to learn the principles of landscape, landscape construction and maintenance; tree and shrub planting, watering, care, and pruning.
  • Basic knowledge of flower planting and care, weed identification, and control, soil preparation, and fertilization.
  • Ability to perform work safely in close proximity to vehicle traffic. Basic knowledge of traffic safety precautions.
  • Skill and ability to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, finger, feel, talk; hear voices and vehicles; smell, see with near and far acuity with color vision and field of vision to detect flowers, weeds, diseases, and conditions of live growth

SUMMER CLEAN UP SEASONALS:
  • Skill and ability to accurately take information from telephone callers and write appropriate information on forms and general office work including filing.
  • Skill and ability to read street maps, record street addresses, give accurate directions to pick-up crew members and prepare a pick-up work schedule for crew members.
  • Skill and ability to safely operate an assigned city vehicle, including a truck with a lift gate.
  • Requires the skill and ability to perform strenuous physical labor.
  • Ability to operate the following machines as demonstrated by previous work experience, pre- employment testing or demonstrated on-the-job performance: telephone; photocopier; computer and typewriter.
  • Ability to establish and conduct verbal communications through speaking, talking and hearing.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with callers or visitors who may be angry, argumentative or disagreeable.
  • Basic knowledge of principles of government regulation and the ability to read, interpret, apply and communicate the requirements of the city's environmental ordinances and other selected provisions of Charter, codes and regulations to perform the essential duties of this position.

  • Requires physical activities including: lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects weighing up to 80 pounds;: climbing, balancing, stopping, kneeling, crouching, reaching. The ability to communicate so others can comprehend the communication, sight, and ability to hear.
  • Ability to performed duties outdoors in adverse weather conditions; tolerate exposure to noise exposure up to 130 decibels (use of protective hearing devices is mandatory for all laboring positions working with or in proximity to gasoline engine powered maintenance equipment to reduce noise exposure to permissible OSHA Job Description Seasonal Worker Page 9 exposure levels); exposure to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, pollens, molds insects, rodents; and mechanical and electrical hazards. Use of eye protection is mandatory for all laboring positions using power lawn mowers, weed whips, shovels, and axes.
