The City of Littleton's Bemis Public Library is looking for a Part Time (20 hour per week) Library Assistant in Adult Services. The Library Assistant provides a high quality and variety of customer services to library customers.  Answers reference questions and readers' advisory questions for customers. Provides assistance to library patrons in locating information and materials.  Instructs patrons how to use library resources, electronic resources and technology, and assists with basic computer help.

This position is eligible for benefits at the part time 20 hour per week rates, including paid time off, medical, dental, vision and retirement.
Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides excellent and expert customer service at the Teen Deck, Reference Desk, and Computer Desk. Assists customers in locating and using library resources, including the online catalog, public computers, and other library technology.
  • Determines customer's needs and provides the information or assistance required to satisfy the customer needs.
  • Provides readers' advisory to customers.
  • Provides informal training to patrons in the use of physical library resources, electronic resources, library computers and technology, including gaming consoles and a variety of STEM-related technologies.
  • Operates a personal computer daily with assigned software including Sirsi, Internet, word processing, and various online databases to assist customers with the use of the library.  Instructs customers on the use of the Internet.
  • Plans and arranges workload and establishes priorities to complete scheduled, assigned work within the parameters and deadlines assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintains daily order and safety by observing customers' behavior and activities and  communicating with them to enforce library standards and rules of safety and conduct.
  • Delivers work products and services to customers within assigned flexible work schedule. Evening and weekend hours are required. 
  • Observes and follows established city and department policies and procedures in the conduct of the job.
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker. 
  • Answers reference and technology related questions from patrons and staff by telephone, in person, and through email. Responds to customer requests for computer-related information and assistance. Provides initial support to patrons and staff. Answers questions regarding the use of the public computers, printers, microfiche/film readers, and related hardware and software including equipment for the visually impaired.

Performs other assignments and projects as required.
This Position Reports To:   Adult Services Supervisor
 Education, Formal Training & Experience:
  • High School diploma or equivalent; a Bachelor's Degree preferred, and 
  • Requires a minimum of two years' Public Library work experience; or
  • Requires an equivalent combination of education, formal training, and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. 

 Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Solid knowledge of general library principles and procedures to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Solid knowledge in the field of literature and literature reference sources and the ability to apply that knowledge to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Solid knowledge of computer operations, word processing and spreadsheet software, and troubleshooting; basic skills in computer operation and the ability to access and retrieve needed information using the computer and assist and instruct customers in the use of library computer equipment.
  • Expert ability to effectively and courteously communicate and interact with customers and staff members who request information and services.  Customers may occasionally be angry, argumentative, or disagreeable. Ability to establish and conduct verbal communications through speaking, talking, and hearing.

  • Ability to operate fine motor office equipment such as paper cutters, heavy duty staplers, and telephones; operate, install, test, and troubleshoot receipt, Braille, and various other printers, multi-function machines, flatbed and handheld scanners; operate, install, and/or troubleshoot copiers, coin machines, microfiche/film readers, CCTV, projectors, TV, DVD/ and sound/amplification equipment

Computer terminal with assigned software and public access  online computer catalog, computer peripherals (i.e. printers, scanners, LCD projectors), telephone, photocopy and fax machines; microfilm/fiche reader/printer; books, magazines, multimedia materials; alarm system. Gaming equipment such as Xbox One and 360, PS3 and PS4 including Virtual Reality.
  • Work for this position is performed indoors in a public building environment.  This work may include occasional exposure to dust from books and electrical hazards from computer equipment.  Some of the work is performed outdoors assisting with library programs.  This work environment include to prevailing weather conditions.
  • Requires frequent lifting and carrying of books weighing 0-50 pounds, retrieving books and  other materials from book shelves at heights ranging from one foot to seven feet; frequent pushing of wheeled book carts weighing 50-100 pounds; occasional stooping, kneeling, and crouching to retrieve library materials; frequent reaching, handling, and fingering of work materials, frequent talking and hearing conversations to communicate with customers and staff; and  sufficient visual acuity to perform essential duties.
